In short: Spanning nineteen interconnected cities in southern Poland, the Katowice urban area is a massive, polycentric conurbation. Often called the Upper Silesian urban area, this region functions as a single, sprawling economic engine. With nearly two million residents, it stands as the most significant urban concentration in the entire country today.

The Katowice urban area, also known as the Upper Silesian conurbation, is a unique urban formation located within the Silesian Voivodeship. Unlike traditional cities that expand from a single core, this region is a collection of nineteen bordering municipalities that have grown together. These include major centers such as Bytom, Gliwice, Sosnowiec, Zabrze, and the namesake city of Katowice itself. As of August 2025, Demographia estimates the total population of this vast conurbation at 1,991,000, securing its status as the largest urban area in Poland and the 22nd largest within the European Union.

Governance in this region has evolved significantly over the last two decades. Between 2008 and 2017, the Metropolitan Association of Upper Silesia coordinated efforts across fourteen cities that held specific powiat rights. This structure was eventually succeeded in 2017 by the Metropolis GZM. While the new entity is broader in scope, encompassing forty-one gminas, it does not represent the entire urban area perfectly; for instance, the city of Jaworzno remains excluded from the Metropolis GZM due to political factors.

The complexity of the region is reflected in its multiple names, which include the Silesian conurbation and the Upper Silesian urban area. Whether referred to by its Polish designations—such as konurbacja katowicka or aglomeracja górnośląska—or its English equivalents, the area remains a critical industrial and social hub. By integrating nineteen distinct cities into a single functional urban zone, the region demonstrates a rare model of polycentric development that continues to shape the economic landscape of southern Poland, serving as a vital case study for how modern European metropolitan areas organize themselves across administrative boundaries.
