From Purdue engineering to the helm of Indian civil aviation
In short: Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu’s ascent in Indian politics is a study in inherited influence and academic pedigree. Born into a political dynasty, he transitioned from a corporate career in Singapore to becoming a key figure in the Telugu Desam Party, eventually managing India's aviation sector.
Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu represents a modern synthesis of traditional political lineage and global education. Born in 1987 in Nimmada, he is the son of Kinjarapu Yerran Naidu, a former Union Minister for Rural Development who served between 1996 and 1998. This lineage provided a foundation for Naidu’s entry into politics in 2012 following his father's death. He quickly rose through the ranks of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), serving as the party's National General Secretary and its leader in the Lok Sabha.
His educational background reflects a cosmopolitan trajectory. After primary schooling in Srikakulam, he moved to Delhi to attend Delhi Public School, R. K. Puram. He later pursued higher education abroad, earning a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Purdue University in the United States and an MBA from Long Island University. Before entering the political arena, he spent a year working in Singapore, a professional stint that preceded his return to India to take up his family's political mantle.
Naidu's legislative career has been marked by a focus on infrastructure and regional advocacy. During the 2014 polls, he secured the Srikakulam Lok Sabha position, where he was recognised as the 16th Lok Sabha's second youngest MP. The 16th, 17th, and 18th Lok Sabha contests saw him repeatedly stand for this specific constituency. His recent appointment as the 33rd Minister of Civil Aviation in June 2024 places him in a high-profile role overseeing India's aviation interests, following a career that has spanned from committee work on Railways and Home Affairs to representing India at the United Nations General Assembly.
Beyond his ministerial duties, Naidu has engaged in public policy debates, such as criticizing sand mining policies in 2019 for their impact on the livelihoods of over 2 million laborers. His political influence is further bolstered by his marriage in 2017 to Sravya Bandaru, the daughter of a former minister and TDP Vice-President, solidifying his position within the party's power structure.
