From shipbuilding village to a summer haven for the global elite
In short: Once a bustling hub for fishing and shipbuilding, Kennebunkport has transformed into one of Maine's wealthiest communities. Today, it is a premier seaside destination known for its shingle-style cottages and as the summer estate for the Bush family, where world leaders have gathered for high-stakes diplomacy.
The town's identity has shifted significantly over the centuries. Originally incorporated in 1653 as Cape Porpus, the area was subject to the Massachusetts Bay Colony. It underwent several name changes, including Arundel in 1701, before finally becoming Kennebunkport in 1821 to reflect its thriving shipbuilding and trade economy along the Kennebunk River.
The landscape itself is a product of deep geological history. The irregular coastline, which provides the sandy beaches of Goose Rocks and Colony Beach, was shaped by the retreat of the Laurentide ice cap approximately 23,000 years ago. Unlike the terminal moraines that formed Cape Cod and Long Island, this region's coast is defined by a mixture of igneous and sedimentary rock layers.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Kennebunkport emerged as a prestigious summer colony. This era left a lasting architectural legacy, particularly in the Cape Arundel Summer Colony Historic District, which features well-preserved shingle-style cottages. This reputation for luxury persists today; the town is home to Walker's Point, the summer estate of the Bush family, where former President George H. W. Bush hosted world leaders like Mikhail Gorbachev and Margaret Thatcher.
While the town thrives as a tourist destination, it maintains distinct local identities. Cape Porpoise continues to operate as a working fishing harbor, and the town center at Dock Square remains a hub of art galleries, seafood restaurants, and souvenir shops.
