The winger whose social media slip caused a Scottish Premiership stir
In short: In 2019, Jordan Jones celebrated a 'dream move' to Rangers while still playing for Kilmarnock. The tweet sparked tension among supporters, yet the player proved his professionalism by scoring a crucial winning goal against his future club just days later.
Jordan Jones, born on 24 October 1994, has navigated a complex career path through several major clubs. Having begun at Redcar Town before joining Middlesbrough's academy, he featured just once for the first team during a 2012–13 FA Cup match against Hastings United. Middlesbrough let him go following the 2015–16 season, after he had undergone several loan spells at Cambridge United and Hartlepool United. He was subsequently loaned to Hartlepool United in February 2015. This followed his initial development within the Middlesbrough youth system.
His move to the Scottish Premiership with Kilmarnock in June 2016 set the stage for a dramatic period. In January 2018, Kilmarnock rejected a £350,000 offer from Rangers to acquire him. However, a pre-contract agreement signed in January 2019 for a move to Glasgow caused friction with Kilmarnock fans after Jones tweeted his excitement. Despite the controversy, manager Steve Clarke supported the winger, who subsequently scored a decisive 2–1 victory over Rangers at Rugby Park, a result that bolstered Kilmarnock's title ambitions.
Jones' career has been marked by both international recognition and regulatory scrutiny. He earned his first senior cap for Northern Ireland on 12 November 2017, appearing as a substitute against Switzerland. Later, in November 2020, he was suspended by Rangers alongside George Edmundson following an investigation into a breach of COVID-19 regulations during a party. Since then, he has moved through clubs including Sunderland, Wigan Athletic, St Mirren, and Carlisle United, eventually joining Shields in September 2026. He also spent time on loan at Sunderland during the 2020–21 season. His tenure at Wigan Athletic included a short-term contract renewal in 2024.
