In short: For decades, Washington's most populous county bore the name of a nineteenth-century slaveowner. A decades-long movement eventually transformed the region's very designation, replacing a controversial political figure with the legacy of a global leader for equality.

Originally established on December 22, 1852, by the Oregon Territory legislature, the county was named for William R. King, an Alabamian who had been elected Vice President under Franklin Pierce. However, the county's identity underwent a profound shift when local officials sought to distance the region from King's history as a slaveowner who profited from human exploitation.

The movement for change gained momentum in 1986 when the King County Council passed a motion to rename the area after Martin Luther King Jr. While the council's decision was made to celebrate the civil rights leader's documented contributions to humanity, the change required state-level approval. It was not until April 19, 2005, that Governor Christine Gregoire officially signed the law into effect.

This transition extended beyond mere nomenclature. In 2006, the council voted to replace the imperial crown on the county logo with an image of Dr. King, a design that was unveiled in March 2007 and now appears on the county flag. This rebranding reflects a broader evolution of the region, which has grown from a nineteenth-century coal-mining hub into a major global technology and healthcare center.

Today, the county is a massive economic engine, with a 2023 average salary of $120,463—significantly higher than the Washington state average. Yet, it faces modern complexities, including a significant homelessness crisis and the need for $8 billion in capital costs to expand transitional housing units.
