In short: While the M1 Abrams took the headlines, the M3 Bradley was quietly destroying more enemy tanks during the 1991 Persian Gulf War. This specialized reconnaissance vehicle was redesigned for a unique role, trading troop capacity for increased firepower and ammunition to support heavy armored cavalry units.

The M3 Bradley Cavalry Fighting Vehicle (CFV) is a specialized derivative of the M2 Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicle. While the M2 is designed to transport a squad of soldiers, the M3 is a dedicated reconnaissance and scout vehicle. To optimize its role, engineers removed the firing ports found in the M2 series to make room for additional TOW missiles and increased ammunition for its 25 mm Bushmaster cannon and 7.62 mm M240C machine gun.

The vehicle's evolution has been marked by both significant combat success and ambitious, yet ultimately cancelled, replacement programs. During the 1991 Persian Gulf War, Bradleys were remarkably effective, destroying more enemy tanks than the M1 Abrams. However, the vehicle's history also includes notable losses to friendly fire—at least 17 instances—compared to only three lost to enemy fire. While initially designed to assist the M113 APC, the Bradley series ultimately superseded that vehicle within the U.S. Army. Army service.

Technological iterations have focused on protection and situational awareness. The M3A2-ODS introduced features like an eye-safe carbon dioxide laser rangefinder and thermal viewers, while the M3A3 variant integrated advanced communication systems compatible with M1A2 Abrams tanks and AH-64D Apache helicopters. Later, the M3A4 model received a 675 horsepower engine, with upgrades beginning delivery in 2020. Despite these advancements, several successor projects, including the Future Combat Systems' XM1201 and the Ground Combat Vehicle, were terminated due to shifting military priorities.
