How a military fortress became the fastest-growing economic powerhouse of southern Russia
In short: Founded in 1793 as a Cossack outpost to secure imperial borders, Krasnodar has transformed from a strategic military camp into a thriving commercial hub. Today, it stands as the largest city in southern Russia, defined by rapid population growth, a unique subtropical climate, and a resilient, business-friendly economy.
Originally established as Yekaterinodar, or 'Catherine's Gift,' the city was built by Black Sea Cossacks to assert Russian dominion over Circassia. For over a century, it served as a vital trading center for the Kuban region. Its identity shifted dramatically following the October Revolution; in 1920, it was renamed Krasnodar, a name combining the word for 'red'—signifying both Communist ideology and an archaic term for 'beautiful'—with the word for 'gift.'
The 20th century brought immense turbulence to the city. It endured the Soviet famine of 1932–1933, which claimed over 14% of its population, and suffered severe destruction during World War II under German occupation. Following the war, the city underwent extensive renovation. Its recovery was marked by notable infrastructure projects, including a 1928 hyperboloid tower by engineer Vladimir Grigorievich Shukhov and, more recently, the 2017 opening of the expansive Galitsky Park, funded by entrepreneur Sergey Galitsky.
Today, Krasnodar is recognized as a premier economic center. Forbes has repeatedly named it the best city for business in Russia, supported by a diverse industrial sector and the highest density of shopping malls in the country. Despite lacking a metro system, the city relies on an extensive network of trams and trolleybuses. With a population that surpassed one million in the 2021 census, the city continues to expand, driven by internal migration and a robust commercial environment that maintained growth even during the 2009 economic crisis.
