From a Kokand fortress to a Soviet capital, the story of Kyzylorda
In short: Deep in the heart of south-central Kazakhstan lies Kyzylorda, a city defined by its shifting identities. Once a strategic fortress guarding the Syr Darya river, it transformed into a Soviet administrative hub, eventually becoming a modern center for rice production and a gateway to the nearby Baikonur cosmodrome.
The origins of the settlement are ancient, with roots tracing back to the time of Seljuk, the founder of the Seljuk dynasty. However, the modern city emerged in 1817 as Ak-Mechet, a fortress belonging to the Kokand Khanate. Its name, meaning white mosque, reflected its local significance. By 1853, the site fell to Russian troops under General Vasily Perovsky, who renamed it Fort-Perovsky. It officially gained city status in 1867, serving as a pivotal point in the Russian conquest of Turkestan.
The 20th century brought radical changes. Following the establishment of Soviet power in 1917, the city was renamed Kzyl-Orda in 1925, a moniker combining Turkic and Mongolian roots to mean red city. It served as the capital of the Kazakh ASSR from 1925 to 1927 before the seat of government moved to Alma-Ata. The city later became the capital of the newly formed Kyzylorda Region in 1938. Since Kazakhstan gained independence in 1991, the city has adopted the Romanized spelling Kyzylorda.
Today, Kyzylorda is a vital economic and cultural hub in the Aral region. It is renowned for its extensive rice production and serves as a supply center for oilfields in the Turgay Basin. Beyond its industrial output, the city is a gateway to significant historical and scientific landmarks, including the memorial complex of Korkyt Ata and the Baikonur cosmodrome. Despite its harsh cold desert climate, which has seen temperatures swing from a record low of −36.1 °C to a high of 46.5 °C, the city remains a resilient center of education and regional development.
