Perched high in the mountains, Kunming’s massive airport serves as a vital Asian gateway.
In short: Located 2,100 meters above sea level, Kunming Changshui International Airport is a sprawling hub connecting Southwestern China to the world. Replacing an older facility in 2012, this engineering feat features the second-largest terminal in China and utilizes unique underground tram systems to navigate its vast, mountainous site.
Kunming Changshui International Airport, which opened on June 28, 2012, serves as a major international gateway for Yunnan province. Situated 24.5 kilometers northeast of Kunming’s city center, the airport sits in a graded mountainous region at an elevation of approximately 2,100 meters. The facility was designed to replace the former Kunming Wujiaba International Airport, which has since been demolished. Construction of the current site began in 2009, and at one point, it was reported to be named after the famous Chinese explorer Zheng He.
The airport’s infrastructure is substantial, featuring two runways of 4.5 kilometers and 4 kilometers in length. Its main terminal spans 548,300 square meters, making it the second-largest terminal building in China. Inside, passengers can access 66 gates equipped with jet bridges out of a total of 88 available gates. To manage the movement of people across this expansive footprint, the airport utilizes a 1.88-kilometer tram line nicknamed the Green Dolphin, which runs partially beneath the aircraft taxiway.
Operational efficiency is a priority at Changshui. In 2014, the airport became the first in China to implement the Airport Collaborative Decision Making system, a move aimed at reducing fuel consumption and operational costs. This focus on performance yielded an on-time rate of 85.3% by 2017. The airport remains a critical hub for several carriers, including China Eastern Airlines and Lucky Air, and is integrated into the city through an extensive transport network, including the Kunming Metro Line 6 and various shuttle bus services that connect travelers to the wider Yunnan region.
