In short: Kuwait International Airport is more than a transit hub; it is a site of intense geopolitical friction. From hosting high-stakes hijackings to becoming a literal battlefield for tanks and drones, its history reflects the volatile security landscape of the Middle East.

The airport's physical evolution mirrors Kuwait's ambition for modernization. While it first launched in 1927–1928, its current infrastructure is defined by massive expansion projects. In 1979, Japanese architect Kenzo Tange's design for Terminal 1 debuted. To manage surging demand, the airport has expanded to include dedicated terminals: Terminal 4 for Kuwait Airways (opened 2018) and Terminal 5 for Jazeera Airways (opened 2018). A massive new project, Terminal 2—designed by Foster + Partners—aims to handle up to 50 million passengers annually and is slated for completion in late 2026.

The facility has also served as a critical military asset. It houses the Abdullah Al-Mubarak Air Base, which has hosted Italian Air Force aircraft since 2014 for operations against ISIL. During the Gulf War, the airport became a site of significant combat; on February 27, 1991, it was the scene of a major tank battle between U.S. and Iraqi forces known as the Battle of Kuwait International Airport.

Recent years have seen the airport face direct kinetic threats. During the 2026 Iran war, the facility suffered damage from suicide drones and Iranian strikes. On June 3, 2026, a strike on Terminal 1 resulted in one death and 63 injuries. Despite these attacks, the airport remains a vital economic artery, currently serving as a primary hub for Kuwait's national carriers and aiming to meet the targets of Kuwait Vision 2035.

Historically, the airport has also been a destination for international incidents. Between 1973 and 1980, it served as a surrender point for several hijacked aircraft from Yemen Airlines, Lufthansa, and Middle East Airlines.
