From five consecutive ducks to a World Cup victory and coaching success
In short: Marvan Atapattu’s professional cricket career began with a disastrous streak of five ducks in his first six innings. Yet, the Sri Lankan batsman transformed from a struggling debutant into a World Cup winner and a national head coach, proving that resilience is as vital as technical skill.
Atapattu's international career was defined by extreme fluctuations. Following his Test debut in November 1990, shortly after turning 20, he was the initial Sri Lankan batsman to record a pair during his first appearance. His early years were difficult; he failed to score more than 29 in his next 11 innings and did not record his first Test century until 1997, seven years after his debut.
Despite this rocky start, Atapattu became a reliable top-order batsman, scoring six double centuries and sixteen centuries in 90 Test matches. His highest Test score of 249 was achieved against Zimbabwe in 2004. In One-Day Internationals, he played 268 matches, including a victory in the 1996 Cricket World Cup, and eventually captained Sri Lanka to an Asia Cup title in 2004.
His career also included notable friction with selectors. After being controversially omitted from the 2007 Cricket World Cup squad, Atapattu requested his removal from the list of Sri Lankan contracted players. Following a series of defeats in 2015, he resigned from his position as Sri Lanka's head coach, a role he had held since September 2014.
Beyond playing, Atapattu transitioned into coaching, serving as the batting coach for Canada and Singapore, and eventually the head coach for Sri Lanka. His tenure as Sri Lanka's head coach was marked by the team's first Test series win in England in 16 years during 2014.
