How a Kuwaiti Football Giant Rose from Humble Beginnings to Continental Glory
In short: Founded in 1953, Qadsia SC evolved from a local team into a dominant force in Kuwaiti football. With 17 league titles and a historic 2014 AFC Cup victory, the club has shaped the nation's sporting landscape while navigating decades of intense rivalries and shifting coaching leadership.
Established in 1953 as Al-Jazira before adopting its current name on 20 October 1960, Qadsia SC stands as a cornerstone of Kuwaiti football. The club’s early years were defined by a fierce rivalry with Al-Arabi, a pairing that birthed the Kuwaiti El Clásico. After finishing as runners-up for three consecutive seasons following the inaugural 1961–62 league campaign, Qadsia secured its first league title in 1968–69. This era set the stage for a long history of domestic success, marked by the leadership of coaches like Mohammed Al-Hamad and Ron Lewin.
The club’s trajectory has seen significant fluctuations in performance. While the 1970s and 1980s brought multiple league and Prince Cup titles, the team also faced challenges, including a record-low seventh-place league finish in 1987 under coach Luiz Felipe Scolari. Despite such setbacks, the club remained resilient, winning the 1988–89 Prince Cup and continuing to compete at the highest levels throughout the 1990s. The turn of the millennium brought further international recognition, notably with the club's first Gulf Clubs Cup victory in the 1999–2000 season.
The 2013–14 season represents a pinnacle in Qadsia’s history, as the club became the first in Kuwait to secure four trophies in a single year: the Kuwait Super Cup, the Crown Prince Cup, the Kuwait Premier League, and the AFC Cup. This achievement followed two previous final appearances in the AFC Cup in 2010 and 2013. Although the decade between 2014 and 2024 saw a relative decline in performance, the club remains a major institution, playing its home matches at the Mohammed Al-Hamad Stadium in Hawalli, the third-largest stadium in the country.
