In short: Long before it was a modern administrative hub, Kurnool was a vital transit point. Known as the Gateway of Rayalaseema, this city on the Tungabhadra River hides a deep history, from 40,000-year-old rock art to the remnants of a powerful 16th-century empire.

The origins of Kurnool are deeply embedded in the landscape of Andhra Pradesh. While the modern city features the 16th-century Konda Reddy Fort, built by King Achyuta Raya, the region's human history stretches back to the Palaeolithic era. Nearby, the Ketavaram rock paintings and sites like the Jurreru Valley contain art that may be as old as 35,000 to 40,000 years. Even deeper, the Belum Caves hold artifacts from roughly 4500 BC, with evidence suggesting Jain and Buddhist monks once inhabited the area.

The city's very name may reflect its ancient role as a commercial crossroads. Historical records suggest the original name, Kandanavōlu, refers to a place where bullock cart caravans would grease their wheels—'kandana' being a reference to grease. This identity as a transit hub has persisted through centuries of shifting rule, from the Chalukyas and Rashtrakutas to the Vijayanagar dynasty, the Mughals under Aurangzeb, and eventually the British, who took control in 1839.

Kurnool's political significance peaked in the mid-20th century when it served as the capital of Andhra State from 1953 to 1956. Today, it remains a vital economic and transport artery, sitting at the confluence of the Tungabhadra and Hindri rivers. Beyond its history, the region is known for its unique geology; the monsoon rains can wash away topsoil to reveal diamonds in the barren lands, and the area is rich in minerals like iron ore, limestone, and quartz.
