The 37-kilometre waterway connecting the Canal du Midi to the Mediterranean
In short: Hidden within the Aude region of southern France lies a complex network of canals. More than just a scenic route, the La Nouvelle branch was a vital engineering feat designed to bring the Mediterranean's commerce directly to the heart of Narbonne.
The La Nouvelle branch is a 3ke 37.3-kilometre extension of the famous Canal du Midi. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is not a single continuous channel, but a sophisticated assembly of three distinct waterways. It begins with the Canal de Jonction, a 5.1-kilometre straight stretch built in 1776, which connects the Canal du Midi to the Aude river. The journey then continues for 800 metres along the Aude itself before transitioning into the Canal de la Robine, a 31.6-kilometre stretch that terminates at the Mediterranean coast in Port-la-Nouvelle.
The history of this branch is one of increasing connectivity. Following the 1681 opening of the Canal du Midi, the prosperity of the region led Narbonne traders to demand better access. In 1686, the engineer Vauban constructed the Canal de la Robine as a lockless open cut. Initially, this required a cumbersome land journey of roughly 6 kilometres from Moussoulens to Le Somail to reach the main canal. It was not until the construction of the Canal de Jonction a century later that Narbonne achieved direct waterway access.
Navigating this branch requires precision. Because of silt banks forming in the middle of the channel, pilots must perform a specific maneuver when transitioning from the Canal de Jonction to the Aude: they must first head upstream before turning back downstream against the opposite bank of the Canal de la Robine. Today, the route offers a unique landscape, passing under Narbonne's Merchants' Bridge—one of France's rare bridge-lined residential structures—and through the Ile Sainte Lucie nature reserve.
