In short: From her 1996 debut to becoming a leading figure in the 2000s, Laila’s career is a study in professional conviction. She famously walked away from major roles to protect her artistic identity, refusing to let producers reshape her brand for the sake of convenience.

Born Laila Mehdi on 24 October 1980, the Indian actress known mononymously as Laila rose to prominence through her work in Tamil and Telugu cinema. After debuting in the 1996 film Dushman Duniya Ka, she secured her first lead role in the 1997 Telugu production Egire Paavurama, directed by S. V. Krishna Reddy. Throughout the early 2000s, she became a mainstay in the industry, collaborating with notable actors such as Vikram in Dhill (2001) and Suriya in a series of films including Nandhaa (2001) and Pithamagan (2003).

Laila’s career was marked by a notable refusal to compromise her professional standing. While she received offers from prominent directors, she famously turned down projects like K. S. Ravikumar’s Dharma Chakkaram. Perhaps most telling was her decision to exit the film VIP. After the original lead, Pooja Kumar, departed the project, Laila was asked by a producer to change her stage name to Pooja to match pre-printed promotional materials. Unimpressed by this request and unaware that actress Rambha was also cast, Laila withdrew from the film, seeking a Tamil debut where she would serve as the sole heroine.

Following a period in Mumbai, Laila returned to the Tamil industry with significant acclaim for her role in Ullam Ketkumae (2005). After a sabbatical, she re-emerged in 2018 through a commercial for Aachi Badam Milk and later served as a judge on the dance show DJD Juniors. Her cinematic return followed a period of personal transition; she married Iranian businessman Mehdi on 6 January 2006, following an eight-year relationship and a four-year engagement. The couple has two sons.
