In short: Lying over 6,000 feet above sea level, Lake Sevan is Armenia's largest body of water and a critical national resource. Once a deep, expansive alpine basin, this mountain-enclosed lake has been radically reshaped by human intervention, serving as a vital engine for the country's irrigation and hydroelectric power needs.

Located in the eastern part of Armenia, the Sevan Basin sits at an elevation of approximately 6,200 feet, hemmed in by mountain ranges that reach heights of 11,800 feet. The lake covers an area of 525 square miles and contains more than 9 cubic miles of water. While dozens of rivers feed the lake, only the Hrazdan River flows out of it, eventually draining into the Aras River and toward the Caspian Sea. Most of the water entering the basin is lost to evaporation rather than runoff.

The lake's role in the national economy is profound. Its high elevation relative to the fertile Ararat Plain makes it a prime candidate for hydroelectric power generation, a potential recognized as early as the 20th century. During the Soviet era, the lake was heavily exploited to support rapid industrialization and agricultural irrigation. Engineers deepened the Hrazdan riverbed and constructed tunnels to divert water, leading to a significant drop in the lake's water level over several decades.

Beyond its industrial utility, the lake is a central feature of Armenian geography and history. It is one of the three great 'seas' of historic Armenia, alongside Lake Van and Lake Urmia. Today, the lake remains a strategic ecosystem, valued for its climatic, recreational, and environmental importance. The surrounding region is characterized by geologic instability and volcanic plateaus, reflecting the complex, mountainous nature of the Armenian landscape.
