In short: When the Indian Railways sought a coach capable of 160 km/h speeds, they didn't just want faster travel; they wanted a revolutionary safety standard. The resulting LHB coach is engineered to be anti-telescopic, ensuring that in a crash, carriages won't smash into one another like a row of falling dominoes.

The LHB (Linke-Hofmann-Busch) coach was born from a 1993–94 initiative to replace aging ICF coaches with a lighter, high-speed design. While the technology was initially imported from Germany for the Shatabdi Express, the Indian Railways secured a technology transfer agreement with Alstom-LHB in 1995. This allowed for domestic production across three state-owned units: Chennai, Kapurthala, and Raebareli. By October 2025, these coaches accounted for 75% of all non-Multiple Unit express trains in the country.

Safety and physics are at the heart of the LHB's design. Constructed from stainless steel with aluminum interiors, the coaches are significantly lighter than conventional rakes. They feature an 'advanced pneumatic disc brake system' and an improved suspension to handle high-speed stability. Most crucially, they are 'anti-telescopic,' a mechanism designed to prevent coaches from flipping or telescoping into each other during a head-on collision. They also offer a major leap in acoustics, producing a maximum noise level of 60 decibels compared to the 100 decibels of older models.

The transition wasn't without growing pains. Early trials on the New Delhi-Lucknow Shatabdi Express saw issues with wide windows being targeted by stone-pelting and ineffective air conditioning. However, after technical refinements, the design became the standard. By the year 2030, Indian Railways intends for every train to be switched over to Vande Bharat or LHB models. The success of the platform is evidenced by its international reach, with India exporting hundreds of customized LHB coaches to countries like Bangladesh and Mozambique.
