Can a master of the Air Raid offense transform football in the American West?
In short: Lincoln Riley, a former walk-on quarterback turned coaching prodigy, has built a reputation for mentoring Heisman Trophy winners and high-scoring offenses. After a dominant, record-setting tenure at the University of Oklahoma, Riley moved to the University of Southern California, aiming to restore the program to its historic national prominence.
Born in 1983 in the small West Texas town of Muleshoe, Lincoln Riley began his football journey as a defensive end before transitioning to quarterback. His coaching career took root at Texas Tech University in 2003, where he served as a student assistant under Mike Leach. This early exposure to the Air Raid offensive scheme became the foundation of his coaching philosophy, which he later refined during a five-season stint as offensive coordinator at East Carolina University.
Riley’s rise to prominence accelerated in 2015 when he joined the Oklahoma Sooners as offensive coordinator. By 2017, he succeeded Bob Stoops as head coach. During his five seasons in Norman, Riley achieved a 55–10 record—the highest winning percentage in the program's history—and secured four consecutive Big 12 Championship titles. His tenure was defined by his ability to develop elite quarterbacks, including Heisman Trophy winners Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray, as well as Jalen Hurts, who later became a prominent NFL starter.
In November 2021, Riley accepted the head coaching position at the University of Southern California. The move was framed by local media as a transformative hire for West Coast football. Riley cited the program's storied history and the appeal of Los Angeles as primary motivations for the transition. Despite a strong start in 2022, his first season at USC ended with narrow, high-stakes losses, including a dramatic 46–45 defeat to Tulane in the Cotton Bowl. As he continues his tenure, the challenge remains to reach the highest level of the sport from his new base in Southern California.
