How a high school record-breaker climbed the ranks of college football
In short: Before coaching at the collegiate level, Rhett Lashlee was a standout high school quarterback. After a career-ending shoulder injury cut his playing days short at the University of Arkansas, he embarked on a coaching journey defined by a deep professional connection to Gus Malzahn.
Rhett Lashlee's path to becoming the head coach at Southern Methodist University (SMU) began with a prolific high school career at Shiloh Christian School. During his time there, he achieved a state record of 40 career wins as a starter and threw 171 touchdown passes, ranking him fourth nationally. His performance also included a single-game record of 672 passing yards, which placed him 12th in the nation.
Despite his success, Lashlee's playing career as a quarterback for the Arkansas Razorbacks ended due to a shoulder injury. After graduating from the University of Arkansas in 2006, he initially stepped away from coaching to co-publish High School Sports The Magazine, a publication focused on Arkansas athletics. This entrepreneurial period allowed him to build extensive networks with high school coaches across the state.
His return to the sidelines was inextricably linked to Gus Malzahn. Lashlee worked exclusively under Malzahn until 2017, with the exception of a single year at Samford University. His coaching ascent included roles at Auburn University, where he was a 2013 finalist for the Broyles Award, and the University of Miami. Following the departure of Sonny Dykes, Lashlee was named the head coach at SMU on November 30, 2021.
Lashlee's coaching philosophy has been marked by tactical shifts, such as the high-tempo offense he implemented at Samford in 2011, which saw the team's scoring increase from 17 to 26 points per game. His ability to revitalize programs led to a two-year extension with SMU following a successful first half of the 2025 season.
