Loni: A historic Mughal outpost now grappling with the world's most polluted air
In short: Once a strategic Mughal pargana known for its salt-rich soil and fortified defenses, Loni has transformed into a critical transit hub for the National Capital Region. Today, this sprawling city of over half a million people faces a modern crisis, recently ranking as the world's most polluted urban center.
Situated in the fertile Upper Ganga-Yamuna Doab, Loni’s history is deeply layered. By the Mughal era, it was documented in the Ain-i-Akbari as a significant pargana under the Delhi sarkar, maintaining a brick fort and supplying infantry and cavalry to the imperial treasury. Its name, derived from the Sanskrit word for salt, reflects its ancient geography. However, the town also bears the scars of 14th-century conflict, notably a brutal massacre ordered by Timur shortly before his campaign against the Tughlaq Sultanate.
In the modern era, Loni has evolved into a vital industrial and logistical node. It serves as the terminus for the world’s longest cross-country LPG pipeline, commissioned by GAIL in 2001, which stretches from Jamnagar to Teela Loni. This infrastructure allows major suppliers like IOCL, BPCL, and HPCL to distribute cooking gas across northern India. Administratively, the city became a separate tehsil within the Ghaziabad district in 2015, governed by the Loni Municipal Council, which manages a complex urban landscape of 55 wards.
Despite its economic importance, Loni faces severe environmental challenges. According to the 2025 World Air Quality Report, the city recorded an annual PM2.5 concentration of 112.5 μg/m3, making it the most polluted city globally. This figure is over 22 times the World Health Organization's recommended guidelines. The pollution is driven by a confluence of factors: heavy vehicular traffic from diesel trucks, industrial emissions from brick kilns and metal processing, and seasonal crop burning. During winter months, temperature inversions trap these pollutants, creating chronic smog that defines the daily reality for its residents.
