The ambush that ended the IRA's most aggressive era
In short: In 1987, a high-stakes operation codenamed Judy resulted in the Provisional IRA's single largest loss of life during the Troubles. What began as a daring plan to use a bomb-laden digger to destroy a police base ended in a pre-planned trap that decimated the group's most aggressive unit.
The attack targeted a Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) base in County Armagh. The IRA's East Tyrone Brigade, known for its aggressive 'deny ground' strategy, planned to breach the perimeter using a backhoe loader carrying 300–400 lb of explosives. They intended to bomb the barracks and kill three officers as they finished their shift. However, British security forces had received intelligence of the plan weeks in advance, possibly through a telephone tap or a double agent, allowing the SAS to set a sophisticated trap.
On the night of May 8, 1987, the IRA unit arrived and, sensing something was wrong during their initial passes, decided to proceed anyway. As the digger crashed through the fence and the explosives detonated, the SAS opened fire from both inside the station and from eighteen hidden positions in the surrounding woods. The ambush was devastatingly effective; all eight IRA attackers were killed. Among the casualties were unit leaders Jim Lynagh and Pádraig McKearney. The intensity of the fire was evidenced by the recovery of 600 spent British cartridge cases from the scene.
The operation remains controversial due to the deaths of two civilians, brothers Anthony and Oliver Hughes, who were mistaken for attackers and shot by the SAS. The incident sparked significant republican outcry, with the victims' families alleging a 'shoot-to-kill' policy. While the IRA mourned the 'Loughgall Martyrs,' the operation successfully neutralized a primary threat, as the weapons recovered from the scene were later linked to dozens of previous killings across Northern Ireland.
