The museum designed to mimic sunlight filtering through date palm fronds
In short: The Louvre Abu Dhabi is more than a cultural export; it is a feat of structural engineering. Its iconic dome uses 7,850 aluminum stars to create a "rain of light," designed to evoke the specific atmosphere of an oasis while housing a global collection of art.
The project began in 2005 when the UAE proposed a museum bearing the Louvre's name, leading to formal negotiations in 2006. While the French daily Le Monde revealed the plans in September 2006, the project initially faced controversy and opposition from several prominent curators. However, the partnership was solidified in March 2007 with a licensing agreement that allows the UAE to use the Louvre name until 2047.
Architect Jean Nouvel was selected in 2006 to design the structure. His vision centered on a "seemingly floating dome" that allows sunlight to filter through a web-patterned roof. To achieve this, engineers at BuroHappold designed a perforated roof of 7,850 aluminum stars of varying sizes, tessellated over eight layers. Such a visual result aims to mimic sunbeams piercing through oasis palm leaves.
A US$27 billion Saadiyat Island cultural project encompasses this enormous museum building. It covers approximately 24,000 square metres, with 8,000 square metres dedicated to galleries. To protect the collection from the corrosive marine environment, engineers designed a watertight basement and tidal pools, creating the illusion of a "museum in the sea."
The museum opened in November 2017, welcoming over one million visitors in its first full year. While some questioned if the exhibits would be restricted due to the region's culture, Louvre director Henri Loyrette stated that the nature of the exhibits was not affected by the museum's location in a Muslim country. The museum aims to bridge the gap between Eastern and Western art through a collection that includes works from around the world.
