From Argentine prodigy to La Liga mainstay: the journey of Lucas Boyé
In short: Known as 'The Tank,' Lucas Boyé has navigated a complex career across Europe's top leagues. From his early days at River Plate to high-profile moves in Spain, his path reveals the nomadic, high-stakes nature of professional football's striker market.
Born on 28 February 1996, Lucas Boyé emerged as a notable talent in Argentina. His early career was marked by rapid progression at River Plate, where he was called up for pre-season training in Salta by Ramon Diaz in January 2014. He first appeared in an unsanctioned match versus San Lorenzo de Almagro on 29 January 2014, before making his formal competitive appearance during the 2013–14 Copa Argentina against Ferro.
Boyé's career has been characterized by a series of significant transfers and loan spells across several European nations. In February 2016, he secured a four-season contract with the Italian club Torino. This period of stability was followed by a more itinerant period, including a loan to Celta in Spain in early 2018, a stint with AEK in the 2018–19 season, and a move to the English Championship side Reading in August 2019.
His recent years have seen him establish a presence in Spain's La Liga. Following a productive spell at Elche that turned into a permanent stay in May 2021, he transferred to Granada in August 2023 for an estimated €7 million, alongside add-ons. Most recently, on 22 August 2025, he signed a four-year contract with Alavés. Throughout his career, the Argentine forward, nicknamed 'El Tanque' or 'El Toro,' has been praised for his agility, technique, and work rate, often drawing comparisons to the former Roma striker Abel Balbo.
