In short: Rising to 4,110 metres, the Mönch is a prominent peak in the Bernese Alps. Often grouped with the Eiger and Jungfrau, this iconic mountain serves as a natural border between Swiss cantons. Beyond its physical stature, the peak hides a railway tunnel deep within its rocky, snow-dusted foundation.

Located on the boundary separating the cantons of Valais and Bern, the Mönch is a central feature of a famous mountain range. It sits strategically between the Eiger to its east and the Jungfrau to its west. The mountain is flanked by the Mönchsjoch pass, which reaches an elevation of 3,650 metres, and serves as a northern sentinel overlooking the Lauterbrunnen valley. Its geography is further defined by its proximity to the Jungfraufirn and Ewigschneefäld, which feed into the Great Aletsch Glacier.

The mountain is not merely a static geological feature; it is also a site of human engineering. A railway tunnel associated with the Jungfrau line passes directly beneath the summit at an elevation of roughly 3,300 metres. This feat of construction allows access through the heart of the massif, contrasting with the rugged, vertical wall that characterizes the mountain's northern face.

The history of human interaction with the peak dates back to the mid-19th century. The first recorded ascent occurred on 15 August 1857, achieved by a team consisting of Christian Almer, Sigismund Porges, and the brothers Christian and Ulrich Kaufmann. While the name 'Mönch' is most famous for this Alpine summit, the term also appears as a family name and as an alternative designation for the star HD 130322 in the constellation Virgo, illustrating the name's diverse cultural and scientific reach.
