In short: Long before it was an award-winning international hub, this runway served as an emergency landing strip for U.S. Strategic Air Command bombers. Today, the Mactan–Cebu International Airport has transformed from a spartan military base into one of the most architecturally celebrated airports in the Asia-Pacific region.

The airport's origins lie in 1956, when the United States Air Force constructed the primary runway as a fallback site for heavy bombers. Originally known as Mactan Air Base, the facility transitioned from a military outpost to a commercial hub on April 27, 1966, replacing the now-defunct Lahug Airport. While it initially focused on domestic routes, international charter operations began in 1978, and the airport eventually became the second busiest in the Philippines.

The modern era of the airport is defined by massive infrastructure shifts and private-sector involvement. Following a 2014 agreement, a consortium led by Megawide Construction Corporation and GMR Infrastructure took over operations through a ₱17.5 billion bid. This period saw the construction of Terminal 2, an international terminal designed by Integrated Design Associates. Featuring Austrian timber arches that mimic an inverted boat hull, the terminal's wave-like roof was recognized at the 2019 World Architecture Festival.

Despite facing significant challenges—including the devastation of Typhoon Haiyan in 2013 and Typhoon Rai in 2021—the airport has continued to expand. Recent developments include the inauguration of a second runway in January 2025, making it the only airport in the Philippines to operate parallel runways since Clark International Airport decommissioned its second strip in 2017. This expansion aims to manage the massive surge in traffic, which grew from 4.8 million passengers in 2009 to over ten million by 2017.
