In short: Long before her family became a global symbol of climate activism, Malena Ernman was already a fixture on the world's most prestigious stages. A celebrated mezzo-soprano, she mastered everything from Handel to jazz, eventually representing Sweden at Eurovision before navigating a profound personal crisis that reshaped her public life.

Born in 1970, Malena Ernman built a formidable career as a mezzo-soprano, training at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and the Music Conservatory in Orléans. By the late 1990s, she was already a rising star in the opera world, earning critical acclaim for her expressive performances in Stockholm and beyond. Her repertoire is remarkably broad, spanning classical opera, cabaret, and jazz, and she has performed at iconic venues including the Glyndebourne Festival, the Salzburg Festival, and the Vienna Festival.

Ernman’s versatility is perhaps best captured by her 2009 Eurovision entry, 'La Voix,' which she co-wrote. While she finished 21st, the performance showcased her ability to bridge the gap between high art and popular culture. Her professional life reached a turning point in 2014, when her daughter Greta Thunberg stopped eating and speaking for several months. The subsequent diagnosis of Asperger syndrome for her daughter forced Ernman to confront the limits of her career, leading to multiple performance cancellations and a shift toward public advocacy.

Today, Ernman is recognized as much for her environmental activism as her vocal prowess. In 2017, she was named WWF-Sweden's 'Environmental Hero of the Year' and co-authored the book 'Scenes from the Heart' with her husband, Svante Thunberg. Despite this pivot, her musical legacy remains significant; she was appointed a royal court singer (Hovsångerska) by King Carl XVI Gustaf in 2010 and continues to release recordings, including her 2025 collaboration 'Terra Mater'.
