From Kazan to the world's greatest opera stages
In short: Born in the Tatar Republic, Aida Garifullina transformed from a student in Nuremberg to a global lyric soprano. After a breakthrough victory at the Operalia competition, she began sharing the stage with legends like Plácido Domingo and performing at massive global spectacles.
Aida Garifullina’s musical journey began in Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan. Raised in a musical family, her development was heavily influenced by her mother, Layla Ildarovna Garifullina, a choir conductor and director of the Centre of Contemporary Music. At age 18, Garifullina moved to Nuremberg, Germany, to pursue formal studies, eventually joining the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts in 2007 under the guidance of American soprano Claudia Visca.
Her professional ascent was marked by significant competitive wins and prestigious debuts. In 2010, she won the Muslim Magomayev competition in Moscow, and in 2013, she secured first prize at the Operalia competition. This victory served as a major catalyst, leading to performances at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg and the Vienna State Opera. Her repertoire grew to include iconic roles such as Susanna in Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, Gilda in Rigoletto, and Adina in L'elisir d'amore.
Garifullina has also become a fixture at major international events. She performed at the 2012 London Olympics opening of the Russian House and the 2018 FIFA World Cup opening gala at Moscow's Red Square, where she sang alongside stars like Anna Netrebko and Juan Diego Florez. Beyond the opera house, her versatility has seen her appear in film, notably performing in the 2016 movie Florence Foster Jenkins, and even performing a duet with pop singer Robbie Williams at the 2018 World Cup opening ceremony.
