The most expensive home in Florida history sits on a tiny island
In short: Manalapan is a coastal sanctuary where the land is scarce and the real estate is staggering. While it feels like a secluded tropical escape, it has served as a backdrop for high-profile murders, presidential yacht auctions, and some of the world's most extravagant private residences.
Manalapan is a small beachside community in Palm Beach County, Florida, characterized by its unique geography. Of its 2.4 square miles of total area, a staggering 81.48% is water, leaving only 0.4 square miles of land. This makes it a densely exclusive coastal enclave. The town was incorporated in 1931 by railroad executive and yachtsman Harold Stirling Vanderbilt, who named it after Manalapan, New Jersey, the home of many of the first settlers.
The town has become a magnet for extreme wealth and high-profile figures. In 2022, Larry Ellison purchased a 22-acre property in Manalapan for $173 million, a sale that remains the most expensive home transaction in Florida history. The estate is notable for its scale, spanning A1A and featuring a series of tunnels beneath the road. Other notable residents and visitors include self-help guru Tony Robbins, who relocated there in 2013, and musician Yanni.
Beyond modern luxury, Manalapan holds a darker place in Florida's history. In 1955, Circuit Judge Curtis Chillingworth and his wife Marjorie were murdered by hitmen hired by one of Chillingworth's fellow judges. Their bodies were thrown overboard with weights attached to their legs and were never recovered. The town also served as a site for political symbolism; in 1977, the U.S. presidential yacht Sequoia was auctioned there for $286,000 to signal a cutback in federal spending and reduce the appearance of an 'imperial presidency.'
Environmentally, Manalapan is distinct. This area belongs to the sole zone within the 48 contiguous states classified as tropical, specifically a tropical savanna zone adjacent to a tropical monsoon zone. This Caribbean-like atmosphere contributes to its status as a premium destination for those seeking a specific, rare geographical environment.
