The ancient Gnostic faith that survives by living along the rivers of the Middle East
In short: Mandaeism is a secretive, monotheistic religion that honors John the Baptist as its greatest prophet. Its followers, the Mandaeans, have maintained a distinct identity for centuries, centered on rituals involving living water. Today, this ancient community faces displacement, with many members forced to leave their ancestral lands in Iraq and Iran.
Mandaeism, or Nasoraeanism, is a Gnostic tradition that traces its origins back to Adam, whom they view as the religion's founder. While they revere figures like Noah and Seth, John the Baptist holds a unique status as their final and most significant prophet. Unlike Christianity, Mandaeans consider Jesus a false prophet and maintain a strict, private tradition that emphasizes divine knowledge, or manda, as the core of their faith.
The religion is deeply tied to the natural world, specifically flowing water, which they call Yardena. This connection is central to their theology, as they believe in a supreme, formless entity known as The Great Life. Their cosmology is complex, featuring a hierarchy of angels and a demiurgic creator, Ptahil, who formed the physical realm. This material world is viewed as a blend of light and dark elements, with the soul seen as an exile seeking to return to the supreme entity.
Historically, the Mandaeans have been identified by various names, including Sabians, and have often sought legal protection as People of the Book. Their survival has been marked by intense privacy and the preservation of a large literary corpus, including the Ginza Rabba. While their history is debated, some scholars point to an origin in pre-Christian times, with evidence of their presence dating back to the Parthian Empire. Today, the community remains small, with global numbers estimated between 60,000 and 70,000 as of 2007.
