The Mandaeans are the last surviving Gnostics, and they revere John the Baptist.
In short: Mandaeans are an ancient ethnoreligious group who believe John the Baptist was the final, most important prophet. As the last surviving practitioners of Gnosticism, they have maintained their unique traditions for centuries. Despite their rich history, the community faces an existential crisis, with most members now living in a global diaspora.
The Mandaeans, whose name derives from the Mandaic word for knowledge, are a distinct ethnoreligious community with roots in the Middle East. They are widely considered the final living representatives of Gnosticism, a belief system that emphasizes the acquisition of divine knowledge for salvation. Central to their faith is the practice of baptism, which must be performed in a freshwater river. They identify as the 'Sons of Light' and trace their lineage back to the disciples of John the Baptist in the Jordan Valley.
The origins of the Mandaeans remain a subject of scholarly debate. While some theories suggest they migrated from Judea to Mesopotamia in the first or third century CE, others propose they emerged from indigenous Gnostic groups in Sasanian-ruled Mesopotamia. Their history is marked by periods of both protection and severe persecution. Under early Islamic rule, they were recognized as 'People of the Book,' yet they have frequently faced threats, including the 1870 massacre in Shushtar and the systematic targeting of their community following the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.
Before 2003, Iraq was home to approximately 60,000 to 70,000 Mandaeans, many of whom were renowned as skilled goldsmiths and silversmiths. The subsequent collapse of security and the rise of extremist violence forced the vast majority to flee, leading to a massive diaspora in countries like Australia and Sweden. Today, the global population is estimated at 60,000 to 100,000, but the community in Iraq has dwindled to fewer than 5,000 individuals. Despite these challenges, Mandaeans continue to preserve their unique language, literature, and religious identity, maintaining their status as a resilient, ancient culture.
