In short: What happens when a daughter's tribute to her father becomes a sprawling multi-language production? Manorathangal began as a modest collection of stories during the COVID-19 pandemic, only to evolve into a prestigious Indian television series featuring some of the country's most renowned actors.

Manorathangal (transl. Mindscapes) is an Indian Malayalam-language anthology series released on August 15, 2024. It features nine featurettes based on short stories by the acclaimed author M. T. Vasudevan Nair. The project was conceptualized by his daughter, Aswathy V. Nair, to commemorate his 90th birthday. While she originally intended to select twenty stories focusing primarily on female protagonists, she eventually narrowed the selection to nine narratives that highlighted universal human emotions like love, lust, greed, and revenge.

The production journey was marked by significant logistical shifts. Production began in 2021, with several segments completing by January 2022. One notable entry, Olavum Theeravum, was directed by Priyadarshan as a remake of a 1970 film and was shot in black-and-white in Thodupuzha. Another segment, Kadugannawa Oru Yathra, saw a directorial change when Ranjith replaced Lijo Jose Pellissery to helm the production in August 2022.

The series faced a major hurdle regarding its distribution. It was initially produced for Netflix, but the platform rejected the anthology after new segments starring high-profile actors like Mammootty and Mohanlal drove up production costs. ZEE5 eventually acquired the rights. The final product features an ensemble cast including Biju Menon and Parvathy Thiruvothu, with Kamal Haasan serving as the narrator for all segments.

Critics have offered varied perspectives on the anthology's quality; while some reviews noted that certain segments fell short, others praised its poetic achievement and identified it as containing 'hidden gems.' The series is also available in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada.
