In Mandaeism, the Supreme God is not the direct creator of our earthly world.
In short: For Mandaeans, Hayyi Rabbi—or The Great Life—is the eternal, supreme force from which all existence emanates. While He is the ultimate source of all light and life, the creation of our imperfect material world was entrusted to lesser beings, leaving Him to oversee salvation and divine radiance.
Hayyi Rabbi, meaning 'The Great Living God' or 'The Great Life,' stands as the singular, supreme deity in Mandaean theology. Unlike the traditional view of a creator who fashions the material world directly, Mandaean doctrine posits that Hayyi Rabbi is the First Cause, the source of the 'Worlds of Light.' From this divine origin, life emanates in various forms and dimensions. The earthly realm, being inherently imperfect, was not crafted by the First Perfect Being Himself, but rather through the command of God and the work of lesser emanations, such as the fourth life, Ptahil, assisted by beings like Hibil Ziwa.
The relationship between the divine and the human is defined by the concept of the 'Great Mana' or 'Great Mind.' Mandaean scriptures, such as the Right Ginza, describe the human soul as a spark or a temporarily detached portion of this over-soul. Hayyi Rabbi is credited with forming the soul and placing it into the human body through the agency of angels. This belief system emphasizes a monotheistic framework that is distinct from other Abrahamic traditions, focusing on a God who has no partners, parents, or offspring, yet remains deeply involved in the redemption of earthly life through the injection of Light, Life, and Ethereal Water.
The reverence for Hayyi Rabbi is central to Mandaean practice, with many prayers beginning with the phrase 'In the name of the Great Life.' This formula serves a function similar to the basmala in Islam or the Trinitarian formula in Christianity. Known by many titles—including 'King of Light,' 'Lord of Greatness,' and even 'Truth'—Hayyi Rabbi represents the eternal, pure radiance of the universe. By distinguishing between the perfect Worlds of Light and the flawed material world, Mandaeism offers a unique perspective on the nature of divinity, emphasizing that while God is the ultimate origin of all things, the complexities of our physical existence are managed through a hierarchy of emanated beings.
