In short: Mario Kart World breaks the traditional four-race circuit, replacing it with a sprawling, interconnected map. By moving development to the Switch 2, Nintendo expanded the field to 24 simultaneous racers and introduced a seamless open-world mode, fundamentally shifting how players navigate the Mushroom Kingdom and its many reimagined courses.

Development began in 2017 under producer Kosuke Yabuki, who believed the series had reached its peak with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. To innovate, the team pivoted to an open-world structure, eventually shifting the project to the more powerful Switch 2 hardware in 2020 to handle the technical demands of 24-player races. The resulting game, released on June 5, 2025, features a massive world where players drive between courses rather than simply selecting them from a menu.

The game introduces the Knockout Tour, a high-stakes mode where racers compete across a continuous path, facing elimination at six checkpoints. Beyond competitive racing, the Free Roam mode allows players to explore environments, collect items, and complete missions. The soundtrack, led by Atsuko Asahi, utilizes a dynamic jukebox system that rearranges classic themes to match the player's location and progress, marking the first time Nintendo collaborated with external musicians like the jazz fusion band Dezolve.

Despite its commercial success—reaching 15.39 million copies sold by June 30, 2026—the game faced scrutiny. Critics praised its technical polish and ambitious scope but noted that the open-world elements felt sparse compared to genre peers. Furthermore, design choices like the 1.1.2 update, which initially prioritized highway-style intermission courses in online play, triggered significant player backlash. While the game remains a landmark for the platform, it highlights the friction between evolving a beloved, rigid formula and the unpredictable nature of open-world design.
