Lagoon water is 98.47 percent of this Pacific republic
Officially a republic, the Marshall Islands form a Micronesian archipelago west of the Date Line and north of the equator. Its 29 coral atolls, 1,220 lesser islets and five main islands split into eastern Ratak and western Ralik chains—and 98.47% of the territory is lagoon, the highest water-to-land ratio of any sovereign state.
Neighbours at sea include Wake Island, Kiribati, Nauru and the Federated States of Micronesia. About half the population lives in Majuro, the capital, and only Kiribati, the Maldives and Tuvalu share the status of atoll nation. Marshallese and English are both official, three-quarters of residents belong to either the United Church of Christ or the Assemblies of God, and the US dollar is the currency.
Settlers who probably came from the Solomon Islands brought coconuts, giant swamp taro, breadfruit and chickens; Bikini may have been occupied by 1200 BCE, and Laura on Majuro shows habitation around the 1st century CE. The wetter south grew taro and breadfruit while northern atolls relied on pandanus. Navigators steered walaps of breadfruit wood by stars and by reading how swells bent around unseen atolls, teaching the patterns with stick charts left ashore. When Otto von Kotzebue called in 1817 he found thatched huts, woven mats, tattoos, and each chain under a paramount chief.
Alonso de Salazar sighted what was probably Taongi on 21 August 1526 but could not anchor. Saavedra’s men landed in 1528 and dubbed the tattooed locals Los Pintados, and in 1565 mutineers from the San Jeronimo were marooned at Ujelang. The name honours John Marshall, who passed through in 1788 after carrying convicts to Botany Bay. Missionaries opened a church and school at Ebon in 1857, copra traders such as Adolph Capelle followed, and Germany declared a protectorate in 1885.
Japan took over in 1914. After World War II the United States ran the islands and set off 67 nuclear tests at Bikini and Enewetak from 1946 to 1958. The US recognised Amata Kabua’s government in May 1979, and the republic joined the United Nations in 1991; American aid under free association was renewed for 20 years in 2023.
