How a single touchdown run caused a minor earthquake in the city of Seattle
In short: Marshawn Lynch, the powerhouse running back known as Beast Mode, once triggered a literal tremor. During a 2011 playoff game, his 67-yard touchdown run was so explosive that the celebration of Seattle fans registered on a local seismograph, cementing his status as one of the most iconic players in NFL history.
Born in 1986 and raised in Oakland, California, Marshawn Lynch developed his versatile athletic skills at Oakland Technical High School. He excelled in football, basketball, track, and wrestling before attending the University of California, Berkeley. At Cal, he became a standout running back, setting the school record for most 100-yard rushing games and earning Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2006. His collegiate success led him to be selected 12th overall in the 2007 NFL draft by the Buffalo Bills.
Lynch spent three seasons in Buffalo before being traded to the Seattle Seahawks in 2010, where he reached the peak of his professional career. His nickname, Beast Mode, became synonymous with his aggressive running style. This was most famously displayed during the 2010–11 playoffs against the New Orleans Saints, when he broke nine tackles on a 67-yard scoring run. The intensity of the crowd's reaction to this play was so significant that it was recorded on a seismograph located 100 yards from the stadium, a phenomenon now locally referred to as the Beast Quake.
Throughout his career, Lynch earned five Pro Bowl selections and helped the Seahawks secure their first Super Bowl title in Super Bowl XLVIII. Beyond his on-field performance, he was known for his complex relationship with the media, famously attending a 2015 Super Bowl press conference only to repeat the phrase, "I'm just here so I won't get fined." Since his final retirement from the NFL, Lynch has transitioned into ownership roles, holding stakes in the Seattle Kraken of the NHL, the Beasts of the Fan Controlled Football league, and the Bay Area Panthers, a team in the Indoor Football League.
