In short: The Martinique national football team holds a remarkable record of regional dominance, yet they are permanently barred from the world's biggest stage. Discover the unique political status that allows them to conquer the Caribbean while remaining excluded from FIFA's most prestigious tournament.

As an overseas department of the French Republic, Martinique occupies a unique position in international football. Because the island is part of France, its players are French citizens and remain eligible to represent the France national team. This status, combined with their lack of FIFA membership, means Martinique is ineligible to enter the FIFA World Cup or any competition organized directly by that organization. The squad's association with the wider footballing community dates back to 1964, when they first joined CONCACAF as an associate member.

However, this does not mean the team is without glory. Controlled by the Ligue de Football de la Martinique—a local branch of the French Football Federation (FFF)—the team is a member of both CONCACAF and the CFU. Under specific FFF regulations, these regional leagues can organize international events and field teams for continental competitions. This has allowed the squad, nicknamed 'Les Matinino' since 2010, to compete effectively within the Americas. The team's identity is deeply rooted in local heritage, as evidenced by their official nickname adopted in 2010.

The team's history is marked by significant regional achievements. They are the smallest population organization to have won the Caribbean Cup, a feat they achieved in 1993 by defeating Jamaica on penalties. Their trophy cabinet also includes two CFU Championship titles, won in 1983 and 1985, and a 2010 Coupe de l'Outre-Mer victory against Réunion. Despite these successes, their performance in the CONCACAF Gold Cup has been more varied, with their best result being a quarterfinal appearance in 2002, where they were eliminated by Canada in a dramatic penalty shootout. Their competitive history in the Gold Cup includes a 1993 debut where they secured a 2–2 draw against Canada. In 2003, the team returned to the tournament but failed to score any goals during their campaign.
