The island nation that plays for a world it cannot join
In short: Saint Martin possesses a national football team, yet it is barred from the world's biggest stage. Despite competing in regional tournaments and maintaining a dedicated league, the territory remains a FIFA outsider, navigating a unique existence between Caribbean competition and international exclusion.
The Saint Martin national football team represents the French side of the island of Saint Martin. While it is a distinct entity from the team of the Dutch half, Sint Maarten, it operates under the jurisdiction of the Comité de Football des Îles du Nord. Because Saint Martin is not a member of FIFA, the team is ineligible to participate in the World Cup, though it maintains a presence in CONCACAF competitions.
The team's competitive history is marked by periods of intense activity followed by long hiatuses. They debuted in the 1990 Caribbean Cup qualifiers, where they secured a 3–0 victory over the British Virgin Islands and defeated Anguilla and the Cayman Islands to reach the final qualifying round. However, their momentum stalled after a 1–0 loss to Jamaica. This was followed by a nine-year absence from the Caribbean Cup, with the team finally returning to the qualification process in 2001.
Recent years have seen a mix of ambitious planning and inconsistent results. In 2014, president Fabrice Baly launched a three-year initiative aimed at professionalizing the squad to attract international scouts and reach the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Although this specific project ended when the team withdrew from the 2017 Caribbean Cup qualifiers, the team remains active. They recently competed in the CONCACAF Nations League, finishing at the bottom of their initial group in 2019 before moving into League C.
