In short: Born in Tunisia and raised in France, Max Azria redefined accessible luxury by bringing designer aesthetics to the mass market. After building a massive fashion empire in Los Angeles, he spent his final years pivoting from couture gowns to the unlikely world of consumer technology and insect-prevention hardware.

Max Azria was born in Sfax, Tunisia, in 1949, the youngest of six children. His family eventually moved to Paris in 1963, where he spent over a decade designing women's apparel. In 1981, he relocated to Los Angeles, eventually launching the BCBG Max Azria brand in 1989. The name was derived from a Parisian slang term meaning good style and good attitude. By 1996, he was presenting collections at New York Fashion Week, and in 1998, he was inducted into the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

Azria’s business strategy was defined by rapid expansion and bold acquisitions. In 1998, he made history by acquiring the French fashion house Hervé Léger, marking the first time an American designer had purchased a French couturier. By 2006, his company operated more than 550 boutiques worldwide, with his designs sold in major department stores ranging from Nordstrom to Singapore’s Takashimaya. His portfolio eventually encompassed over 20 distinct brands, including the young contemporary line BCBGeneration and a collaborative collection with Miley Cyrus for Walmart.

Despite his success, the fashion house faced significant financial turbulence. Following his departure from the company in 2016, the business filed for bankruptcy in 2017 and was subsequently sold to Marquee Brands and Global Brands Group. Rather than retiring, the 68-year-old designer pivoted to a new venture in 2017 as CEO of ZappLight, a company producing LED light bulbs integrated with bug-zapping technology. Azria passed away in 2019 at the age of 70, leaving behind a legacy that spanned from high-end couture runways to the practical utility of household hardware.
