How an Irish ranch name became the world's capital of venture capital
In short: Before it was a global tech hub, Menlo Park was a bucolical landscape of orchards known as the 'Valley of Heart’s Delight.' Today, this California suburb sits at the heart of the digital economy, serving as a blueprint for how university research can transform a quiet agricultural region into a global powerhouse.
The identity of Menlo Park is rooted in a blend of Irish heritage and American industrial ambition. Named by Irish settlers in the mid-19th century after their home village in County Galway, the area was originally part of the Spanish land grant Rancho de las Pulgas. For much of the early 20th century, the region was defined by its agricultural productivity, earning the moniker 'Valley of Heart’s Delight' due to its vast fruit orchards.
The transition from orchards to semiconductors was driven by the vision of Frederick E. Terman. An electrical engineer at Stanford, Terman sought to replicate the research-industry integration he had witnessed at MIT. Following his wartime work on radar technology, Terman helped establish the Stanford Industrial Park in 1951, providing long-term leases to high-tech firms. This created a self-sustaining ecosystem: professors consulted for tenants, and companies recruited the university's top students.
This 'start-up culture' was cemented by a series of corporate fractures. In 1956, Nobel laureate William Shockley established his laboratory in the park, but a group of engineers soon resigned to form Fairchild Semiconductor. This pattern of engineers leaving to found new ventures became the hallmark of the region. By the mid-1970s, the primary source of startup funding had shifted from the U.S. government to venture capitalists, earning the area its reputation as the 'Capital of Venture Capital' [S1:<0xE2><0x80><0x8A>p11, S4:p1].
