In short: Mohamed Elneny’s father insisted he sleep with a ball to build a lifelong connection to the sport. This unconventional upbringing helped shape a career spanning elite European leagues, international glory with Egypt, and a legacy as Arsenal’s longest-serving player, proving that dedication often starts long before the professional pitch.

Born in El Mahalla El Kubra in 1992, Mohamed Elneny’s path to professional football was meticulously cultivated by his parents. His father, who discovered a deceased intruder on the family property in 2019, famously had the young Elneny sleep with a football to foster an innate bond with the game. This early immersion led him through the youth ranks at Al Ahly and eventually to Al Mokawloon, where he established himself as a regular before the 2011–12 Egyptian Premier League was cancelled following the Port Said Stadium disaster.

Elneny’s European breakthrough came in 2013 when he joined FC Basel. His impact was immediate; he secured four consecutive Swiss Super League titles and became a fixture in European competitions. In 2016, he made history as the first Egyptian to play for Arsenal. Over an 8.5-year tenure, he became known for his tactical discipline, passing accuracy, and ability to control the midfield. Despite facing intense competition from new signings, he remained a persistent presence, outlasting numerous midfield rivals and earning praise for his physical, mobile style of play.

Beyond his club success, Elneny has been a cornerstone of the Egyptian national team, earning over 100 caps since his 2011 debut. He has represented his country in multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, finishing as a runner-up in 2017 and 2021, and was named to the 2021 Team of the Tournament. His career has also seen him navigate high-profile controversies, including public scrutiny over his social media activity regarding the 2021 Israel–Palestine crisis, which prompted discussions between him and his club. Today, his influence extends to the grassroots level, having founded his own club, Elneny FC, in 2024.

Following his departure from Arsenal in 2024, Elneny continued his professional journey in the UAE, where he won the League Cup and was named Player of the Season for 2024–25. By 2026, he had moved to Greece to play for Levadiakos. His career remains a testament to longevity and adaptability, transitioning from a young talent in Egypt to a seasoned international veteran who continues to shape the game on his own terms.
