Monastir: A Tunisian coastal city built on ancient monastic roots and modern tourism
In short: Once a quiet retreat for monks and priests, this Tunisian peninsula has transformed into a bustling hub of industry, education, and international tourism. From its ancient Phoenician-era tunnels to its role as a film set for cinematic classics, Monastir balances a rich, layered history with a vibrant modern economy.
Monastir, the capital of the Monastir Governorate, sits on a peninsula along Tunisia's central Mediterranean coast. Its name originates from the Greek term monastērion, reflecting its history as a site for hermits and religious figures. Archaeological evidence, including rock-cut tombs and a network of tunnels, suggests the area was significant during the Phoenician era and later used by Romans and early Muslims. The city was founded upon the ruins of the Punic–Roman settlement of Ruspina.
The city is perhaps best known for its well-preserved 8th-century Ribat, a fortress once used to monitor the sea for hostile fleets. This historic structure has served various roles over the centuries, including as a sanctuary for ulema seeking contemplation and, in the 1970s, as a filming location for Jesus of Nazareth and Monty Python's Life of Brian. Today, the Ribat houses a museum of Islamic arts, inaugurated in 1958, which attracts nearly 100,000 visitors annually.
Modern Monastir is a diverse economic center. While tourism is a primary driver—supported by over 50 hotel units and the Habib Bourguiba International Airport—the region also maintains a strong agricultural base. Olive cultivation covers 60,000 hectares, and the area produces significant quantities of fishery products and vegetables. Education also plays a vital role in the city's identity; the University of Monastir, founded in 2004, hosts a large student population, solidifying the city's status as a major academic hub alongside Tunis, Sfax, and Sousse.
