Morogoro is a Tanzanian hub where giant rats detect landmines and disease
In short: Nestled at the base of the Uluguru Mountains, Morogoro is far more than a regional capital. It is a center for agricultural innovation, home to prestigious universities, and the unlikely headquarters for a non-profit training Gambian pouched rats to save lives by sniffing out landmines and tuberculosis.
Located 196 kilometers west of Dar es Salaam, Morogoro is known locally as Mji kasoro bahari, or the city short of an ocean. While it lacks a port, it serves as a vital agricultural and educational nexus. The city hosts the Sokoine University of Agriculture alongside several other institutions, including the Muslim University of Morogoro and Jordan University College. Its cultural legacy is equally rich, having nurtured influential musicians like Mbaraka Mwinshehe and the historic Morogoro Jazz Band, which formed in 1944.
The city's infrastructure faces complex environmental challenges. The Mindu Dam, which provides 80% of the city's water, has been a source of controversy since its 1978 inception. Deforestation and sedimentation have threatened its capacity, while mercury runoff from nearby gold mining and increased bilharzia rates have complicated water safety. In response, a 2012–13 program funded by USAID/MCC with an $8.31 million budget sought to restore water quality by tapping into resources from the Uluguru Mountains.
Tragedy and resilience define the city's modern history. In August 2019, a catastrophic fuel tanker explosion claimed 100 lives, marking one of Tanzania's most significant disasters. Yet, the community remains deeply engaged in social welfare, with the Amani Center supporting over 3,400 disabled individuals. Today, Morogoro maintains global ties through sister-city relationships with Milwaukee, Linköping, and Vaasa, reflecting its role as an interconnected participant in the international community.
