In short: In 1901, Theodore Roosevelt was hiking the Adirondacks when a messenger caught up to him. The news delivered during his descent would change the course of American history, turning a vacationing Vice President into the leader of a nation in mourning.

Mount Marcy, the highest point in New York at 5,343.2 feet, is more than just a geological landmark. While its anorthosite foundation was formed roughly 1.1 billion years ago, its modern landscape was sculpted by the glaciers of the Pleistocene Epoch, which retreated about 12,000 years ago. These ice ages left behind features like Lake Tear of the Clouds and the rugged, rocky outcrops that define the peak today.

The mountain's history is a tapestry of scientific exploration and political drama. The first recorded ascent occurred on August 5, 1837, led by geologist Ebenezer Emmons, who named the peak after New York Governor William L. Marcy. Decades later, in September 1901, Roosevelt was ascending the mountain with his family when he received word that President William McKinley had been assassinated. The news reached him at Lake Tear of the Clouds, prompting a hurried descent to begin his transition to the presidency.

Today, the mountain faces a modern struggle between recreation and preservation. While the peak offers breathtaking views—including Mount Royal in Quebec on clear days—the influx of hikers has threatened the fragile alpine tundra. An ecological study in the late 1960s by Edwin Ketchledge revealed that human trampling was destroying rare alpine plants. This led to significant habitat restoration in the 1970s and the establishment of the Summit Steward program to protect the 18-acre ecosystem of mosses and specialized flora.
