Why the Netherlands is shifting its election calendar in 2030

In short: The Dutch general election is usually a March affair, but a logistical collision is moving the next vote to May. This shift highlights the delicate balancing act of national governance, where the timing of a democracy's most important vote is dictated by the rhythm of local municipal cycles.

The next Dutch general election is scheduled for 15 May 2030. While regular elections in the Netherlands typically occur in March, the 2030 date is an exception. This deviation exists because municipal elections are already slated for March 2030; holding both simultaneously would create logistical and administrative friction, leading the government to push the national vote back by two months.

The House of Representatives consists of 150 members, with 76 seats required to form a majority. Seats are distributed using the D'Hondt method, a mathematical formula for proportional representation. A minimum of 0.67% is required for a party to gain representation, which means their total vote count must reach or surpass the Hare quota.

The system employs a semi-open list, allowing voters to influence who specifically takes the seats won by a party. While a party's total votes determine its overall share, individual candidates can leapfrog their position on a list if they secure at least 25% of the Hare quota—roughly 0.17% of the total votes. If multiple candidates meet this preferential threshold, their ranking is decided by the raw number of votes they received. Any remaining seats are then filled based on the original order of the electoral list.

The 2025 general election recently reshaped the political landscape, resulting in losses for all parties in the Schoof cabinet. For the initial time, Democrats 66 (D66) topped the House with 26 seats; they tied with the Party for Freedom (PVV) in total chairs while gaining 29,668 extra votes. Furthermore, the 2026 merger of GroenLinks (GL) and the Labour Party (PvdA) created a new entity, Progressief Nederland (PRO).
