In short: For over forty years, the North West Company dominated the Canadian fur trade, pushing deep into the wilderness to challenge the Hudson's Bay Company. This fierce rivalry, fueled by aggressive expansion and exploration, ultimately reshaped the continent's map before the British government mandated a merger in 1821.

Formally established in Montreal in 1783–1784, the North West Company emerged from a network of traders seeking to break the Hudson's Bay Company's monopoly. Led by figures like Simon McTavish and Benjamin Frobisher, the company utilized a sophisticated structure of Montreal-based agents and wintering partners. By 1799, the organization employed nearly 2,500 people, ranging from high-ranking bourgeois to the voyageurs who paddled the vast interior waterways.

The company's reach was immense, with operations extending to the Arctic Ocean, the Pacific Coast, and the American Northwest. Explorers such as Alexander Mackenzie and David Thompson mapped uncharted territories, while the company’s vertical integration—including its own London supply house—allowed it to compete globally. Despite this, the firm faced constant pressure from the Hudson's Bay Company, which held a charter for the resource-rich Rupert's Land. Internal competition also plagued the North West Company, leading to the formation of the rival XY Company, which was eventually absorbed in 1804.

The end of the North West Company was precipitated by a combination of over-harvesting, the War of 1812, and violent clashes like the 1816 Battle of Seven Oaks. As the company's financial viability waned, the British government intervened, ordering a merger with the Hudson's Bay Company in 1821. This consolidation ended the North West Company's independent existence, leaving behind a legacy of exploration and a transformed fur trade that had once been the backbone of the Canadian economy.
