In short: For two centuries, the Hudson's Bay Company operated as the absolute authority over Rupert's Land, a vast wilderness stretching from the Atlantic to the Rockies. This corporate-run domain functioned as a private estate, dictating trade, law, and settlement long before it was eventually sold to the Canadian government in 1870.

Established in 1670 by royal charter, Rupert's Land was named for Prince Rupert of the Rhine, the first governor of the Hudson's Bay Company. The territory encompassed the entire Hudson Bay drainage basin, covering approximately 3.9 million square kilometers. For the company, this was a commercial monopoly designed to secure exclusive rights to trade and commerce across a massive, sparsely populated region of North America.

While the company held legal status as the territory's proprietor, its governance was often informal. For decades, it lacked a formal judicial system, relying on ad hoc arrangements until the 1830s. Even then, legal order in the Red River Colony was not merely an imposition from above; research suggests it relied on local support. The company's influence extended to social structures, including the hiring of First Nations and Métis workers, though internal advancement for these employees remained a point of contention among different administrators.

The territory's end came in 1870, following the Rupert's Land Act of 1868. The company surrendered its charter to the British Crown for £300,000, and the land was transferred to Canada. This transition was fraught with tension, including the Red River Rebellion, as local populations felt they were being traded like property. Although the Supreme Court of Canada later affirmed the company's historical ownership of the land and its minerals, the transfer did not resolve the complex, ongoing questions regarding indigenous title and sovereignty.
