In short: Spanning 135,000 square miles, the Northeast China Plain is the heart of Manchuria. Once a natural highway for nomadic tribes and a battleground for competing empires, this lowland region has transformed from a frontier of violent clashes into one of China's most vital agricultural breadbaskets.

The Northeast Plain, also known as the Manchurian Plain, is a massive, low-lying basin in northeastern China. With a surface area of approximately 135,000 square miles, the entire region sits below 1,000 feet in elevation. It is primarily the product of erosion from surrounding highlands, creating a landscape that has historically served as a strategic corridor for nomadic peoples moving across the Eurasian plain between the Volga River and the Korean peninsula.

For centuries, the region was a melting pot of ethnic groups, including the Chinese, Mongols, and various Tungus peoples like the Manchu. The southern Liao Plain saw early Chinese agricultural settlement as far back as the 3rd century BCE. Throughout the Han, Sui, and Tang dynasties, China exerted varying degrees of control over the area, though it was frequently contested by powerful nomadic empires such as the Khitan and the Juchen. The rise of the Manchu in the 17th century eventually led to the establishment of the Qing dynasty, which governed China until the early 20th century.

Today, the plain is renowned for its rich, humus-heavy soil, which supports large-scale agriculture. This fertility has earned it the nickname 'Great Northern Granary.' However, the region faces environmental challenges, including harsh, prolonged winters caused by cold fronts from the Siberian anticyclone. These conditions necessitate heavy reliance on fossil-fuel-intensive heating, which, combined with industrial activity, impacts the local air quality. Despite these modern pressures, the plain remains a critical hub for human settlement and economic activity in Northeast Asia.
