A twisted Christmasland where unhappiness is against the law
In short: In the supernatural horror series NOS4A2, an immortal being feeds on the souls of children, depositing their remains into a nightmare village. This twisted Christmasland is a product of the predator's imagination, where every day is Christmas Day and any form of sadness is strictly forbidden.
The series, based on Joe Hill's 2013 novel, centers on Victoria "Vic" McQueen, a working-class artist who discovers a supernatural ability to track the immortal Charlie Manx. Manx is the primary antagonist who preys on children to sustain his existence. The narrative explores the psychological toll on Vic as she attempts to rescue his victims without losing her own sanity or becoming a victim herself.
The production of the series involved a complex development cycle at AMC. It was first announced in December 2015, with a writers room led by Jami O'Brien opening in May 2017. The show eventually premiered on June 2, 2019, and concluded its run in August 2020. Despite its short lifespan, the series successfully adapted the entire storyline presented in Hill's original novel.
The series faced significant challenges during its second season. While it was renewed in July 2019, ratings plummeted to about half of what they were during the first season. This decline contributed to the series being canceled in August 2020. Critically, the show received mixed reviews; while it was praised for capturing the spirit of Hill's work, it struggled to build the atmosphere necessary for its ambitious premise.
Though the story is set in Haverhill, Massachusetts, the production utilized various filming locations in Rhode Island, including the Cranston Street Armory. Prior to airing on TV, the production received initial notice via an Austin, Texas screening at the 2019 South by Southwest film festival.
