In short: Headquartered in Jaipur, the North Western Railway is a vital artery for India, managing thousands of kilometers of track across Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab, and Haryana. From historical metre-gauge lines to the modern Western Dedicated Freight Corridor, this zone powers industrial growth and links diverse regions through a complex logistics network.

Established on 1 October 2002, the North Western Railway (NWR) zone was formed by reorganizing divisions from the Northern and Western Railway zones. It currently operates across 578 stations, serving as a critical logistics hub for the Delhi–Mumbai Industrial Corridor. The zone is divided into four main administrative divisions: Ajmer, Bikaner, Jaipur, and Jodhpur, each with a distinct history and operational focus. While Jodhpur’s railway roots trace back to 1882, other divisions have evolved significantly, transitioning from colonial-era metre-gauge networks to modern broad-gauge systems.

The zone’s infrastructure is essential for moving both people and goods. It handles significant freight traffic, including cement, salt, gypsum, and food grains, while also supporting tourism by connecting religious and historical sites like the Ajmer Sharif Dargah and the Dilwara Jain Temples. Beyond domestic transport, the NWR has historically facilitated international connectivity. The Thar Express, which began operations in 2006, serves as a passenger link between Jodhpur and Karachi, reflecting long-standing rail communication agreements between India and Pakistan.

Technological modernization has been a priority for the NWR. By December 2017, the zone implemented GPS-enabled 'Fog Pilot Assistance System' devices to improve safety and precision in signaling, replacing older, less efficient methods. This commitment to modernization extends to its workforce, which is supported by a network of divisional railway hospitals. As the NWR continues to integrate into the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor, it remains a cornerstone of regional development, balancing the legacy of its 19th-century origins with the demands of 21st-century industrial logistics.
