In short: Nykaa didn't just disrupt the beauty market; it redefined the trajectory of Indian e-commerce. By blending a high-touch inventory model with a massive content ecosystem, it transformed from a niche online retailer into a multi-billion dollar retail powerhouse and a global beauty authority.

Nykaa was founded in April 2012 by Falguni Nayar, who transitioned from a career as a Managing Director at Kotak Mahindra Capital to launch an online beauty retailer. The company began commercial operations in 2013 and hit a major milestone in 2020, becoming the first Indian unicorn startup headed by a woman. Fidelity, a worldwide asset management company, provided a 2020 injection of capital, while a November 2021 IPO secured ₹5,352 crore (US$724.05 million) during a US$7.4 billion valuation.

The company's success lies in its hybrid business model. The company employs a stock-holding strategy regarding personal care and beauty items, yet functions as a marketplace for fashion. This allows for tighter control over quality and brand experience. Nykaa expanded its reach significantly by launching its own house brands, such as Nykaa Cosmetics in 2015 and Nykaa Naturals, while also acquiring significant stakes in established brands like Dot & Key and Earth Rhythm.

Beyond retail, Nykaa has built a content-driven ecosystem to influence consumer behavior. This includes Nykaa TV on YouTube, the Nykaa Network community, and the Beauty Book magazine. This strategy of social persuasion marketing helps maintain brand loyalty. However, the company has faced scrutiny; in late 2022, it faced heavy criticism over corporate governance regarding a 5:1 bonus share issuance, which led to the resignation of CFO Arvind Agarwal and an investigation by the Securities and Exchange Board of India.
